Year endings and beginnings – Time to think about phases

It has been a long time since the last blog, and I must admit, 2024 has been a challenging year both professionally and personally. The year brought its share of obstacles, both in my career and in my close family circle, which made it difficult to focus and keep up with everything. Yet, life has a way of testing us, and I believe we can take these experiences and transform them into growth and learning.

One of the key lessons that this period of difficulty has taught me is the importance of resilience. It’s easy to get caught up in moments of hardship, feeling overwhelmed by the weight of it all. But it’s in these moments that resilience becomes the most vital trait we can nurture. Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, to bounce back stronger, and to persist in the face of adversity. But how do we cultivate this strength?

In times of struggle, it’s crucial to focus on the important things, those that truly matter. Often, we get distracted by the noise—what is happening around us or what others might expect from us. The real work, however, is about finding your core priorities and driving them forward. This can be your health, your family, your passion, or your purpose. By narrowing our focus to what is essential, we give ourselves the clarity and energy to move forward with intention.

The Power of Setting Objectives

One of the most effective ways to foster resilience is by setting clear and meaningful objectives. This is a key component in any transformative journey—whether personal or professional. Setting objectives helps us focus our energy and provides us with a roadmap to guide us through difficult times. However, the process of goal-setting needs to be done mindfully, keeping in mind that sometimes, reaching our goals means we have to consciously decide what to leave out.

Often, when we set our goals, we might make the mistake of overloading ourselves, thinking that the more we can tackle, the better. But it’s not about doing everything; it’s about doing the right things. This brings us back to the concept of focus. What can we let go of in order to prioritize the truly important objectives? By learning to say „no“ to distractions, we create space to move forward with purpose. The act of leaving things out, of letting go of what no longer serves us, is just as crucial as the pursuit of what we want to achieve.

This process can be uncomfortable because we are often faced with the fear of missing out or letting go of opportunities that might seem promising. However, this discomfort is a natural part of growth. When we strip away what is unnecessary, we open up space for clarity, creativity, and the focused energy required to achieve what matters most.

The Phase Model by Erich

Erich’s Phase Model offers an intriguing and insightful perspective on life’s ebb and flow. According to Erich, life moves in phases—some are easier, while others present significant challenges. The key to navigating these phases lies in understanding that each phase has its purpose, whether it is one of ease or difficulty. There is a learning component in each one of them. Having this understanding creates a powerful conviction: that no matter what phase you are in, it is temporary. This conviction can have a profound impact on your ability to persevere.

When we find ourselves in a difficult phase, the awareness that this phase will eventually end gives us the strength to endure. We know that the storm will pass, and with each passing day, we are one step closer to the light at the end of the tunnel. This knowledge provides hope, grounding us in the belief that what we are going through is not permanent, and better days lie ahead. Resilience is strengthened by the certainty that life moves in cycles, and that tough times will give way to more favorable periods.

Conversely, when we find ourselves in a more prosperous or peaceful phase, the conviction that this, too, will eventually end allows us to fully enjoy and appreciate the positive energy of the moment. Rather than becoming complacent, we can harness the momentum of this good phase to prepare ourselves for any challenges that may arise in the future. The awareness that all phases are transient enables us to make the most of the present while being ready for what comes next. It’s like storing up the energy and lessons of a good phase to fuel us through more challenging times ahead.

Why This Perspective Matters

By adopting Erich’s perspective, we gain a more balanced approach to life. We stop viewing difficult times as something to dread and view better times with a sense of urgency and preparation.  This mindset allows us to be present, adaptable, and proactive, regardless of the circumstances.

In practical terms, this means that resilience isn’t just about enduring hardship—it’s about recognizing the cyclical nature of life and using both the hard times and the good times to our advantage. Difficult phases give us the opportunity to build inner strength and clarity, while good phases offer us the chance to build momentum, take action, and make plans for future success. Whether we are in a phase of struggle or ease, it’s important to stay aligned with our goals and objectives.

“Drive Your Topics Forward” Without Hesitation

Under the motto “drive your topics forward,” I encourage you to set clear objectives and focus on what matters most, while also recognizing the need to let go of distractions. During difficult phases, resilience will be your anchor, helping you persevere. During easier times, the same conviction will allow you to thrive and prepare for whatever lies ahead.

There’s no shame in hesitation, but there is power in action. When we hesitate, we delay our growth, but when we act, we create momentum. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress.

By focusing on your objectives and adopting the mindset that life moves in phases, you can keep moving toward your goals. It may be challenging now, but in time, you will find that this resilience is what will carry you through any adversity. And when the good times come, you will know exactly how to use them to propel you toward the next level of success.

In closing, 2025 can be a year of great growth, resilience, and transformation. By setting your sights on the important things, letting go of distractions, and embracing the cyclical nature of life, you can navigate both the highs and the lows with grace and purpose. Together, let’s drive our topics forward, leaving hesitation behind, and embrace every phase of life as an opportunity for growth.
